For Parents

Things you can do at home to prepare your child for school:

  • Allow your child to set the table.
  • Count the items in your shopping basket.
  • Read to your child.
  • Encourage your child to read basic words e.g. it, the, and, is ect.
  • Speak to your child about their day.
  • Sing songs together.
  • Play with blocks and make coloured patterns.
  • Encourage your child to play with play dough.
  • Encourage your child to cut pictures from junk mail.
  • Encourage your child to carry their own kindergarten bags to and from the centre.
  • Sing the Alphabet song together.
  • Encourage your child to make their own bed in the morning.
  • Encourage your child to pack up their toys.
  • Encourage your child to dress themselves.
  • Encourage your child to help you hang the clothes. This could be by passing the clothes to you or by getting the pegs.
  • Encourage your child to count the pegs.
  • Encourage your child to eat independently.
  • Set an alarm clock for going to bed and waking up in the morning.
  • Encourage your child to brush their teeth independently.
  • Explain to your child about making right and wrong choices.
  • Play basic board games as a family.
